Embracing the&nbsp

Era of Cloud Computing

One of the pillars in which the 4th Industrial Revolution hinges is the massive and strategic shift to cloud computing. In essence, cloud computing enables individuals and organizations to keep essential systems and resources in remote servers.

The Era of Cloud Computing

Becoming increasingly mainstream, cloud computing now covers a large range of services including storage, office applications, networking, and processing. Organizations are starting to realize that cloud computing is one of the key drivers for digital transformation.

Why Organizations are Adopting the Cloud

Gartner reported that by 2022, cloud-based IT spending will grow faster making it one of the most disruptive forces in the digital age. Here are some reasons why migration to the cloud appeals to an increasing number of enterprises in almost all industries.

Availability

On-demand availability is ultimately the main competitive advantage of the cloud. Without assistance from IT supports, computing resources can be made available by the cloud service provider to users as needed.

Accessibility

With the Cloud, businesses are now more mobile than ever. Data can easily be accessed through wireless devices (mobile phones, laptops, and iPads among others) whenever, wherever, as long as you are connected to the internet.

Low Cost

Being virtually available, enterprises (especially SMEs and start-ups) do not have to spend a dime to pay for physical equipment to store their data, manpower, and other maintenance services — significantly lowering operational cost. You only pay for the services you will use.

Scalability

Features, number of users, and storage capacity can be expanded or reduced depending on the business’ demand without having too much financial trade-off and infrastructure alteration.  Meet the requirements you need to keep the business going fast.

Key Considerations Before Migrating to the Cloud

As we gauge the advantages of moving to the cloud, organizations must also determine their readiness in terms of resilience, financial capacity, and general effect to business operation.

Security

Reliable network security is imperative for every business migrating to the Cloud. Cyber attacks are all over and you don’t want your data available to everyone. Security policies to be implemented must meet the requirements of your Cloud provider.

Choosing What Type of Cloud Environment

There are 4 storage environments for your data with varying levels of control, deployment, security, and user base. Choosing the right Cloud environment based on business needs and the data to be stored is key for the Cloud’s successful utilization.

Preparing Your Network

The key to preparing your network is to understand which applications to use and how it affects the overall performance of your organization. Enterprises must invest in the future-proof and scalable network infrastructure to support a smooth migration to the cloud.

Performance Management

Integrating cloud applications in your organization requires a thorough assessment of your network architecture and capabilities. As organizations move to the cloud,  performance monitoring tools must be in place to provide real-time and relevant feedback.

Start Flying High with ICT for the Cloud

Start Flying High
with ICT for the Cloud

The decision to move to the cloud offers great potential for innovation and improvement. However, enterprises should begin to plan for their cloud strategy – ensuring that the shift is necessary and the organization’s resources and infrastructure capabilities are ready.

The Cybersecurity
Threat Landscape

in the Philippines 2022

As a remote working, hybrid workplace, and digitalization continue to rise in 2022, the risk of cyberattacks remains high.  While these tech trends grow, the amount of data created increases as well. Cyber attackers take advantage of this transitory period through data breaches that target small and medium-sized organizations

In this infographic, we will be walking you through what the current Philippine cybersecurity threat landscape looks like this year. Afterward, and more importantly, we will show you how you can combat this by deploying a zero-trust architecture

While ransomware is not necessarily a new form of cyberattack, the strategies of bad actors have evolved and continue to seep through the cracks of outdated cybersecurity systems in the Philippines. And in a recent study, the ransomware attack volume rose to 623.3 million in 2021. This alarming figure is 105% higher than 2020’s numbers.

Today’s ransomware tactics can be best described as double-extortion. To force organizations to pay the ransom, attackers exfiltrate and take crucial company information. If this isn’t enough trouble already, they threaten that they would leak or sell the data on the dark web if the victims would not pay within a given time.

Malware shares an equally intrusive and destructive nature as ransomware and has the same goal of infiltrating and stealing information. With this umbrella term, we will discover, according to the same study mentioned earlier, a staggering 5.4 billion malware attacks occurred last year. And compared to 2020, malware attacks skyrocketed to 167% in 2021.

Ransomware and malware typically start with a phishing email. Carrying this out will be child’s play and will cost little to nothing for the attackers. And yet, over the years, this strategy has still been so effective in gaining access to an entire corporate network. You can prevent this when you train and educate your workers on how to be aware of this threat. Boost your cybersecurity this 2022 to ensure the protection of your people and your company too.

The Attack Surface is Expanding

Multiple reports forecast that IoT (Internet of things) devices will grow from 35.82 billion in 2021 to 75.44 billion by 2025. This is a welcome development towards a more convenient and interconnected world from appliances to smartphones. But on the other hand, bad actors are now switching gears and are finding new entry points to exploit.

As our work environments evolve and grow, facing this would cause various challenges for IT teams as they try to keep up in protecting as many vulnerabilities as possible in the best way they can. Experts advise taking a holistic and integrated approach to cybersecurity this 2022. This unified approach would be beneficial since this would efficiently defend against the growing number of cyberattacks.

Rapid Adoption and Migration of Cloud

In 2020, six out of 10 businesses decided to move their work to the cloud. In another recent report published this year, 63% of SMB workloads and 62% of data will reside in a public cloud within the next 12 months. The numbers show the high level of trust these companies place in cloud computing.

Cloud services and solutions exploded in the last few years. Aside from migrating valuable data, many organizations had to speed up migrating entire systems to the cloud.

Cloud providers offer a basic level of security, but it would be best not to simply rely on this alone. The responsibility of securing a cloud infrastructure ultimately lies in the organization.

Going Beyond Passwords and Multi-Factor Authentication

Nowadays, having a simple password isn’t enough as your defense against cybercrime. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) takes a step further by adding a second, third, or more factors to the login process. Some of its advantages include ease in deployment and keeping accounts secure even if a password has been compromised. But not many companies see its value.

With all the gaps we’ve seen in the current cybersecurity scene in the Philippines, we need a more effective way to keep our data, resources, and people safe. This leads us to the need for a solution that has a fresh approach to the concept of trust.

What is Zero-trust Architecture?

Zero-trust security is founded on the principle: “never trust, always verify.” This means no one has automatic access to anything. All code, systems, and people are required to request access to data and other assets. This architecture helps proactively protect data with visibility and control that would lessen the burden on overwhelmed IT personnel who had to mitigate every risk and breach in the past.

By investing in and prioritizing this cybersecurity solution, enterprises would be able to operate more effectively regardless of the circumstances. Other benefits include:

  • Reduced infrastructure complexity
  • Secure access for those working in hybrid cloud and on-site environments
  • Secure access for those working on a variety of devices
  • Compliance with internal and regulatory standards

According to a recent survey, 83% of security and risk experts consider zero-trust a critical strategy for their companies, with 80% planning to fully adopt it this 2022.

Cybersecurity Solutions You Can Trust

For more than two decades in the industry, we have shown our competence in providing cybersecurity solutions tailored to the specific needs of any organization in any industry. We can deploy the zero-trust architecture you need to secure all the bases of your company network today and for years to come.

Where is the Philippine ICT Heading in 2020?

Philippines is becoming one of the emerging tech regions in Asia as strong public investments are expected to support the country’s economic growth. More than ever, the Philippine Government recognizes the need for strengthening efforts to widen the reach of ICT in the Philippines. In line with this, P5.2 billion is allocated for the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) for 2020 to support its efforts in rolling out interconnectivity and data security programs.

Of the overall budget, P1.1 billion will be used to install free WiFi in public places. Some P280 million will be used to fund free Wi-Fi facilities in state universities and colleges while P196 million will be for the National Broadband Plan.

Furthermore, it is also envisioned that around P295 million is needed on creating the National Government Data Center (NGDC) which will serve as the physical infrastructure that will interconnect government agencies through centralized data centers, servers, and storage facilities.

The Market Potential of ICT in the Philippines

According to the 2015 Frost & Sullivan report, there is going to be a shift in total spending in the ASEAN IOT Market. Singapore, the undisputed leader with 44.25% of total IoT spending, will drop by close to the 50%

Singapore 2015
44.25%
Singapore 2020
50%

while the Philippines share will increase by 12%. This only means one thing, the Philippine IoT spending is forecasted to grow from US $55.1M in 2014 to a staggering US $766.8M in 2020. We are about to see the emergence of Philippine’s ICT Market.

Philippines 2015
12.56%
Philippines 2020
24.65%

Considering that the Philippines is a country with a young population that is in the process of building its ICT market, it is poised at creating a government, as well as companies, that are actively looking for partners in the ICT space.

Key Areas in ICT Development:

Back in 2014, Manufacturing and Logistics has the biggest share of spending in ICT. However, the sectors of banking, healthcare and smart city hold a lot of promise for future investments of ICT.

Banking

In a study done by the World Bank, it is said that 69% of Filipinos did not have bank accounts in 2014. This factor, combined with the rise of online shopping, presents a gigantic opportunity for e-wallet operators in the ICT space, as they could easily claim roughly two-thirds of the Philippine population as potential customers.

Healthcare

Meanwhile, in the latest Philippine Statistics Authority report, health-related expenditures pose an 8.3% increase in total spending in 2018 compared to the previous year contributing 4.6% to the country’s GDP. In effect, the Philippine government has been also actively looking at ICT services for healthcare solutions in an effort to provide a sufficient level of health care, especially to rural areas and spread-out island communities.

Smart Cities and Infrastructure

Smart Cities are an important component in growing digital economies, as it incorporates sustainable growth and deep technological integration into the country as well as giving substantial economic boost. The Philippines have planned for multiple smart city projects that will be launched over the next decade such as the New Manila Bay City of Pearl and New Clark City being the core developments. The New Clark City alone is predicted to contribute an additional USD$31 billion to the country’s GDP.

Factors Driving ICT Spending Increases in 2020

Upgrading Infrastructure

We are all aware that the world of technology is fuelled by continuous advancements. Upgrading ICT infrastructures, which remains to be the main driver of ICT spending increase, is an imperative for businesses because keeping legacy ICT infrastructures can expose your business to risks like system downtimes, decreased productivity, security issues, and increased cost.

Growing Security Concerns

The threat of cyberattacks remains as one of the biggest challenges that the Philippines is facing nowadays. The growing number of aggressive and malicious hackers targeting businesses is not to be shrugged off. A study by Frost & Sullivan states that a large-sized organization in the Philippines can possibly incur an economic loss of $7.5 million, more than 200 times higher than the average economic loss for a midsized organization ($35,000). Organizations should invest in a robust unified threat management system that protects their most valuable assets, data and information.

Employee Growth

The abundance of human and talent resources in the Philippines presents an under-tapped national asset that is ripe for mobilization. Building a thriving ICT ecosystem requires a mechanism to complement this opportunity with a conducive policy and business environment that can optimize productivity and increase competitiveness. For instance, ICT innovations, such as higher broadband speeds first introduced through the BPO sector’s rigorous global requirements, are slowly becoming mainstream requirement in other industries like banking, education, the government, and even at home.

Ready to Get Started?

Ready to
Get Started?

In the end, we at MEC look forward to how the private and government sectors will strengthen the partnership and move past industry boundaries to build on the momentum of digital growth that will promote balanced regulation, empowered innovative endeavors, and boosted competitiveness for inclusive growth of all Filipinos.

ICT Trends in the Philippines

ICT in the PH in the past few years witnessed the emergence and eventual maturity of advanced technological trends. As we celebrate the National ICT Month in the Philippines, let us assess how we are faring in the Information and Communications Technology industry.

Digital Determination

PH organizations are moving towards digital determination by employing a unified strategy of continuous enterprise-wide digital innovation to transform markets, business models, as well as, products and services.

IDC, in its recent CIO Summit, presented a study that 37% of Philippine enterprises are considered digitally determined.

Prioritization of Cybersecurity

The ICT PH shift to Digital Transformation made a fundamental impact on Cybersecurity. Vulnerability is greatly increased with evolving threats as more and more sensitive data are stored in the cloud, and are accessed remotely via mobile devices.

The Shift of Focus to Digital Analytics

Big Data analytics is seen as one of the major drivers of the evolution of ICT in the PH making it easier for companies to make data-driven decisions. With abundant data available, machine-learning application and artificial intelligence can be used to interpret and obtain meaningful insights for businesses.

Upscaling the Workforce & Workplace

The advantages of ICT innovations are realized with the help of the right people with the right skills. Thus, continuous bridging of skill gap among the workforce is vital in ensuring the effective integration of acquired digital technologies in the ICT PH landscape.

Sustaining Power Supply

The greater requirement of ICT systems for energy quality calls for power systems that are robust and able to endure any disruptions to the main power systems. An increasing number of organizations then are starting to invest in reliable and alternative electrical backup systems.

State of ICT in the Philippines

More than a decade of celebrating the National ICT Month, the government recognizes the need for strengthening efforts to widen the reach of ICT in the Philippines. In partnership with various sectors of society, they are extending the benefits of digitalization to a wider scope of beneficiaries.

The Future of Payments

The rise of online shopping positively contributes to the adoption of e-wallet in the country. Although cash is still the primary mode of payment, Filipinos are slowly immersing themselves to online payments. According to BSP, online transactions are to reach 20% of total payments in 2020– foreshadowing changes in ICT in the PH.

WHAT IS INDUSTRIAL
REVOLUTION?

An industrial revolution is a turning-point in human history characterized by the emergence of new technologies resulting to a profound change in the way people live, work, and interact with one another.

Before 4.0

The recent advancement in technology all points out to the conclusion that we are on the brink of the fourth industrial revolution. To understand where we are heading, let us look at the first three revolutions that dramatically altered our economic and social structures.

Industry 1.0 – Steam Power and Mechanization

The First Industrial Revolution utilized steam power to mechanize production. This transformed the farmlands to highly industrialized urban societies. The revolution was propelled by the development of railroads leading to accelerated economic exchanges.

Industry 2.0 -Electricity and Mass Production

The Second Industrial Revolution harnessed electricity to power development and communication. During this period, methods of production were reviewed and assembly lines were formed to improve work productivity.

Industry 3.0 – Automation

Also known as the digital revolution, the Third Industrial Revolution capitalized on electronics and computing machines to automate production. The rapid advances in digital and communication technologies led to new and better ways of generating, processing, and sharing of information.

Industry 4.0 – Cyber-physical Systems

Industry 4.0 is building on the technologies of its predecessors but on an exponential rate. Innovations in machine intelligence blur the divide between cyber and physical world leading to an integrated and holistic approach to business processes.

The Driving Forces Behind Industry 4.0

Four widely practiced data-centric digital trends led to the emergence of the Industry 4.0. These complementing trends enabled interconnected machines to communicate and make informed decisions with minimal to zero human intervention.

Big Data

Big Data is a huge amount of unstructured data received from different sources with varying speeds. These chunks of data will be analyzed, categorized, and stored as information. Once interpreted, patterns, trends, and other valuable business insights can then be derived.

Internet-of-Things

Imagine a web of interconnected smart devices a person uses every day and you now have an image of the Internet-of-Things. These devices, once connected to the Internet, can exchange information with other devices or with humans, anywhere and anytime— enabling a more mobile way of doing business.

Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing is a service that enables the migration of data to virtual storage in the Cloud. Hosted online, software and applications are now more accessible to a wider range of devices from anywhere in the globe, whenever needed.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence or AI is the ability of any type of machine, big or small, to learn and replicate the way humans think and act through its integration with data-driven algorithms. Through AI, machines are now empowered to make real-time logical decisions lessening the probability of human error.

Digital Transformation Trends in Industry 4.0

As the need for digital transformation becomes more apparent in  Industry 4.0,  there are four major trends we need to focus on in order to stay relevant in the future.

Connected Consumers, Customized Experiences

Personalized experience is the new standard for customer satisfaction today. With the consumers getting involved in every step of value creation, businesses are combining mass customization with responsive and unique products.

Empowered Employees

New communication and collaboration tools make it easier for employees to collect and share information anytime and anywhere. Enhancements in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) empowers organizations to make data-driven decisions.

Optimized Production

Real-time information from machines and sensors enables timely and dynamic interventions to various stages of production. This gets even better with machine learning which allows systems to predict and respond to outcomes based on live data inputs.

Transformed Products

Innovations in products and services are built on enhancing existing technologies to be more accessible and efficient. Driven by a continuous influx of performance information, production becomes less expensive and time-consuming.

Infrastructure Enabling Technologies

With digital transformation expected to be in full swing during the Industry 4.0, preparing a resilient and solid technology infrastructure is necessary to maximize its economic, industrial, and manufacturing benefits.
